Senior Food Shelf

The Senior Food Shelf opened its doors in 1984 in response to the community’s need for a place where seniors could feel comfortable seeking assistance and could have their unique nutritional needs met. In 2013 we served over 900 clients, providing a total of 111,600 pounds of food.

Dedicated volunteers help each visitor “shop” for their choice of fresh produce, meat, bread, and shelf-stable foods. Clients may visit once per month and receive 20 pounds of food each time. Pet food and hygiene items are also provided when available.

Clients must be 55 years or older, live in Hennepin County, and meet income guidelines.

If possible, please bring a photo ID each time you visit along with your own grocery bags.

When you make your first visit, please have a seat in the waiting area. A staff member or volunteer will greet you shortly; let them know it is your first visit. They will help you complete a short registration form about your household and income (you do not need to present any proof or paperwork). You will then be guided through the food area to choose what you would like to take. Your entire visit will usually take less than 30 minutes, though it may be an hour or more at very busy times.
